About XBRL
XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language) is a digital language used for standardizing and automating business reporting, making data machine-readable and easily analyzable. Originally developed for financial reporting, XBRL is now increasingly being adopted in sustainability reporting to enhance the comparability and accessibility of disclosures.
Several key standards and regulations are integrating XBRL into sustainability reporting:
-
Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB): SASB has released an XBRL taxonomy, enabling companies to tag sustainability data for more efficient reporting.
-
International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS): IFRS is finalizing a Sustainability Disclosure Taxonomy, aligning sustainability reporting with financial disclosures.
-
European Single Electronic Format (ESEF): Mandates the use of Inline XBRL (iXBRL) for financial and sustainability reports in the EU, combining human-readable content with machine-readable data.
-
Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD): This EU directive requires companies to adopt iXBRL, promoting standardized and transparent sustainability reporting.
The adoption of XBRL in sustainability reporting is crucial for enhancing data transparency, accuracy, and comparability. By making reports accessible to both humans and machines, XBRL streamlines the reporting process, reduces errors, and meets the growing demand for reliable sustainability information from stakeholders, including investors and regulators. This shift not only improves data quality but also helps companies comply with evolving sustainability reporting standards and regulations.

Engagement process
-
Customers are provided licenses to access XOR and to upload draft report documents to the document portal for each filing period. Their service process can work with documents in multiple formats including PDF, Word, Excel, and HTML/XHTML.
-
Ez-XBRL’s team analyzes the contents and proceeds with the XBRL tagging process.
-
Once tagging is completed, Ez-XBRL’s Quality Assurance team reviews the document for tagging accuracy, tagging completeness, and runs validations to ensure the quality of the XBRL document. In addition to XBRL quality and accuracy, their QA team also ensures that the final output matches the formatting standards and requirements of the source document while keeping the reporting rules in focus.
-
The draft XBRL / Inline XBRL document is uploaded to XOR and customers are sent an email notification with a link to the upload document.
-
Customer’s reporting team is now able to review the draft XBRL-tagged document using the features available in XOR.
-
Customer’s audit and assurance teams are also to gain access to XOR via suitable licenses to the platform.
-
Ez-XBRL’s team makes changes to the document based on the comments and feedback provided during the review process. Updated versions are put through further quality checks before being delivered to the XOR portal for further review and approval by the customer.
