Search results can be formatted into different display types based on the functions chosen for the selected fields.

Function types

A field can have either a group by or an aggregate function applied to it. The Visualization Display options available for a search depends on the number of group by and aggregate functions within the selected fields.

Group by

A group by function groups together rows that have the same column value. This function is used as a step in data aggregation necessary to generate different display types.

Aggregate

An aggregate function runs a calculation on a value set and returns a single value. Common aggregate functions include Count, Sum, Average, Min, and Max.

Visualization Display Types

The following table details all available display types and their function requirements.

Display Type	Function Requirements
Vertical Bar	4 or less group by functions with 1 aggregate function. 1 group by function with 2 or more aggregate functions.
Horizontal Bar	4 or less group by functions with 1 aggregate function. 1 group by function with 2 or more aggregate functions.
Pie	4 or less group by functions with no aggregate functions.
Donut	4 or less group by functions with no aggregate functions.
Line	1 group by function with 1 or more aggregate functions. 2 group by functions with 1 aggregate function.
Area	1 group by function with 1 or more aggregate functions. 2 group by functions with 1 aggregate function.
Bubble	1 group by function with 2 or 3 aggregate functions. 2 group by functions with 1 aggregate function.
Heat Map	2 group by functions and 1 aggregate function.
Tree Map	1 or more group by functions and 1 aggregate function.
Featured Metric	1 aggregate function.
Combination	1 group by function and 2 or 3 aggregate functions.
Sunburst	2 to 4 group by functions and 1 aggregate function.
Sankey	2 or more group by functions and 1 aggregate function.
